Armstrong rigid core flooring is newer β at least, it's newly common on the retail market. It's a click-lock plank with a dense composite core, attached underlayment, and a factory-applied wear layer. It costs more, usually $2.80 to $4.50 per square foot for the Armstrong lines I order.
And here's what I tell every contractor who calls me under a deadline: these two don't compete on speed the way most people think. They compete on done-fast β done once, done correctly, no crying at 11 PM.

The conventional wisdom that peel-and-stick is the emergency answer comes from an era when click-lock rigid core wasn't on store shelves. That thinking is outdated. The quick fix that actually works is the floor built to be installed once.
Ordering Without Losing Your Mind
A few practical notes from 200-plus rush jobs:
Don't ask for rush. Ask for certainty. The rush line gets you comfort, not accuracy. Request a delivery window with a named carrier and a tracking number, then set an alert.
Order overage. For peel-and-stick, buy 10-15% extra β you'll cut wrong pieces and you'll want leftovers for repairs. For rigid core, 7-8% is usually enough. Keep unopened cartons stored flat in a dry room so the numbers match if you need to order an identical batch later.
If you're just comparing colors, skip the expensive freight. A small swatch mailer ships via USPS as a large envelope. As of the January 2025 USPS rates, the first ounce of a flat costs $1.50. It takes a few days, but it beats a $45 courier bill for a piece of cardboard.
And please: leave the expansion gap. I've pulled up buckled rigid core floors because someone thought the baseboard would hide a tight fit. The spec exists for a reason.

The question isn't which floor is cheaper, or even which floor is faster. The question that matters under deadline pressure is: which floor can I trust to be done by Friday?
