Patching a Hole in the Wall: Three Scenarios, Three Methods (And the Mistakes I Made in Each)
Eight years ago, I became the person responsible for every wall, ceiling, and floor in a mid-sized commercial building. For this size, the mesh patch method is reliable: cover the hole with self-adhesive mesh, spread compound over it, let it dry, sand, and repeat twice more. But for most doorknob dents, mesh is enough.
One more thing if the wall is painted: don't plan to touch up just the patched spot. Industry standard color tolerance is Delta E below 2 for a mismatch to be effectively invisible in print—for brand-critical colors, according to Pantone's matching system. Paint matching behaves the same way, except a wall patch also adds a texture difference, so your eye will catch it even when the color is technically close. Repaint the whole wall, or at least from corner to corner.
Scenario C: Large holes (over 4 inches) or water damage
Now we're in a different world. If the hole is bigger than your hand, or if there's any water staining, you need to cut out the damaged section completely and install a new piece of drywall. Cut a clean rectangle out to the nearest stud, screw in a backing board if there's no stud, attach the new piece, tape the seams, and finish the compound in three or four coats.

Protect the floor before you start

Step 2: Probe the back. Carefully slide a screwdriver or wire into the hole and feel what's behind the wall. Hollow? That's drywall, and these scenarios apply. Wood, concrete, or a rigid insulation board? Stop—different material, different repair.
Step 3: Look up and down. Is the wall below a ceiling tile? Above a wood floor? Any water stains nearby? If there are, protect the floor first—and if there's water damage, fix the leak before cutting anything.
Step 4: Ask yourself honestly: have I done this before? If the answer is no, start with Scenario A. Do one small repair, build your confidence, work your way up. There's no shame in starting small.
When to call someone else
